![]() ![]() Released 45 years ago on November 8, 1978, Magic is an underappreciated classic and one of horror’s most unnerving love stories. The TV spot was so effective that it’s arguably scarier than the actual film it wasn’t the straightforward horror story the teaser indicated but much more a psychological thriller. The simple but terrifying ad didn’t give away much about the actual plot, but it did instill a lot of traumatic nightmares for any young viewers that happened to catch it. Imagine sitting around the TV with your family and seeing this commercial pop up on screen back in the 1970s. We feel she could be taught to be good just like the vast majority of humans were. The phrase “they don’t make them like they used to” is thrown around a lot in the context of nostalgia, but in the case of the first teaser for Magic, it’s quite accurate. Those of us who love Dren probably have pretty deep abilities to forgive the character for just about anything given her beauty (both inside and out) and circumstances. So I think most Dren fans would say that their beloved fictional movie character here did everything she could with what she had been given to work with.ĭren in reality just wants what any human wants, and if anything she's damaged by circumstances and misunderstood by anyone looking over her fictional life. Two people always arguing over the decision to have created you is not exactly an enriching upbringing. You can believe that Dren was either alone much of the time or with two very confused and panicy caretakers, who very often were even fighting with each other (or with Dren). The other thing that we have to consider is that people learn how to treat others though interaction with other people. The rate of speed that Dren grew up wasn't her fault as she had no control over this. A being can't learn from life experiences they've never had or mistakes they've never made yet. So if Dren had grown up at a normal rate of speed, she may have well become a fine upstanding young lady cause she would have learned to control her emotions better, among other things. How many kids with much more life experience than Dren have fried ants on the sidewalk using a magnifying glass or have done other terribly immature things to other life-forms. She may have looked like an adult but probably in many ways was still a child. Dren lacked life experience to act properly. She'd have to have been SUPERHUMAN to have her intellectual/emotional maturity grow at the same rate as her body grew. ![]() The next major thing I can point out in the defense of the Dren character is how quickly she grew up. Perhaps the best reason she is not is because none of the things she did were really that much her fault.Īnything that happened with a sex change involving her wasn't her fault anymore than a person with a birth defect or born predisposed to a particular disease is responsible for that. After Elsa looks at the drawings Dren made of her is when the movie takes things one or more notches downward in many fan's opinions.īut on to the important point. Just take the ending with a grain of salt. About the only thing most people seen to be able to agree on is that they do not like the ending.įor anyone who never got around to seeing this movie, I will point out that this document by necessity contains some spoilers, so I recommend you bookmark this page, watch the movie and come back. If you websearch about the movie "Splice", you will find just about every opinion a person can have for a movie represented, both good and bad. So like with everything similar, I have made the decision to openly discuss this. ![]() When my obsession with the movie Splice (and the Dren character) came back recently, I'd have been a hypocrite to deny or hide this. ![]() First of all, I have never been one to lie or hide my feelings about anything important to me. ![]()
